A craft beer brewery in the midst of a residential area?!

Haneda Brewery

Haneda Brewery technically is located in the residential area in Yaguchi-no-watashi even though “Haneda” is in the name. Is there really a craft beer brewery in a residential area?! We interviewed Mr. Shunsuke Noro, the sales manager and manufacturing manager at Haneda Brewery. Despite our initial skepticism about the brewery’s presence in a residential area, Mr. Noro warmly welcomed us.

- Mr. Shunsuke Noro
Haneda Brewery was established in 2014 as the first craft beer brewery in Ota City. Yuichiro Suzuki, the founder, graduated from the Department of Fermentation Science at Tokyo University of Agriculture. Following his graduation, he joined a food plant manufacturer and played a crucial role in the launch of a prominent craft beer brewery. During this period, he was also involved in the design of brewery equipment, which ultimately sparked his inspiration to establish his own brewery in Ota City. He has a genuine passion for DIY, having completed everything from painting the walls to building brewery tanks and installing pipework. The name “Haneda Brewery” was chosen to enhance the recognition of Ota City by leveraging the global familiarity of Haneda Airport. The intention was for the brewery’s beer to reach beer enthusiasts around the globe.

Haneda Brewery currently offers a range of main products under their original brand, Haneda Beer. These include Pale Ale, Weizen, IPA, Golden Ale, Porter, and Session IPA. In addition, they also specialize in manufacturing private label beers for restaurants. You can savor the delightful taste of Haneda Beer at Brew Lounge Ichigaya (Chiyoda-ku), a directly managed shop of the Haneda Brewery group. Additionally, you can purchase their beers at liquor stores located in Ota City , Haneda Airport, and Oimachi Garden.

One of our distinguishing features is our ability to undertake commissioned production of original beer in small quantities, setting us apart from other breweries. Our minimum production quantity is 150 liters, which allows companies to order approximately 400 bottles of original beer, each with a capacity of 330 milliliters as a starter. In fact, we receive numerous orders for various occasions, including events, corporate benefit packages, and anniversary gifts for parties. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested.

* Please note that the beers are not available for sale at the brewery in Yaguchi-no-watshi, and the brewery does not offer tours.

In the photo, Mr. Noro (on the left) and Mr. Shuntaro Kobayashi (on the right), Brewing Manager, express their desire for us to take pride in and enjoy their locally crafted beer.

Crafting connections: Brewing beer to unite and share Omori’s stories

Omori Sanno Brewery

Omori Sanno Brewery, a craft brewing company born in 2019, hails from the heart of Omori. At the core of their concept, Omori Sanno Brewery aims to elevate the spirit of Omori by embracing a love of beer, inviting everyone to experience the essence of Omori. We had the pleasure of visiting Mr. Keiji Machida, the proprietor of Hi-Time, a specialty beer shop dedicated to Omori Sanno Brewery, located on Omori Yanagi Hondori Shopping District.

- Mr. Keiji Machida
Omori Sanno Brewery does not craft beer in Omori. I was originally working as a web designer. My involvement in the website revamp of Omori Yanagi Hondori Shopping District led me to delve into event planning and become deeply engaged in the local community. Subsequently, I conceived the idea of working to help rejuvenate the town by introducing beer as a catalyst for revitalization. In 2018, I completed SunNo.808, which is the predecessor of Omori Sanno Brewery. After that, I further studied the history of Omori and constructed an even more solid concept and completed Omori Sanno Brewery, NAOMI, and GEORGE.

Currently, Omori Sanno Brewery sells seven kinds of beers. NAOMI and GEORGE draw inspiration from the characters Naomi and Joji in Junichiro Tanizaki’s novel, Naomi. AN takes its motif from Anne of Green Gables, translated by Hanako Muraoka, who resided in Magome Bunshimura (Magome Writers’ Village). These are just a few examples of their beers, all of which bear names derived from stories related to Omori and showcase captivating package designs.

Hi-Time is the place where you can enjoy all these beers from Omori Sanno Brewery.
This space was previously designated as a bicycle parking area for Kadoya Shokuhin, a local supermarket that has since closed down. However, the area has now been transformed into a beer vendor stall where people can casually drop by and enjoy a refreshing drink. The take-out counter at the storefront is a creatively repurposed old handcart that has been skillfully painted. We hope to take this on a walk through Omori, selling our delightful selection of beers. We have also prepared growlers, allowing customers to purchase beer in volume and take it home. Customers have the option to fill up the growlers with beer and enjoy it either at home or while taking a leisurely stroll. We hope that everyone will find various enjoyable ways to savor our beer.

Our primary objective is to foster connections among people and build a strong sense of community in Omori. We firmly believe that craft beer serves as a means to achieve this goal, and it reflects our fundamental attitude. In line with this concept, we have been organizing a monthly event called OMORI KAORU MARKET in the square in front of the East Exit of JR Omori Station since April 2023. At the event, Omori Sanno Brewery sets up a temporary shop where visitors can indulge in our delightful selection of beers. Alongside us, other vendors offer a range of food options that pair excellently with our brews, as well as handcrafted items, engaging workshops for the whole family, and live music. Our intention is for this event to become a regular occurrence, actively engaging everyone in the local community. We hope you will drop by to join us.

Mr. Machida says, “I eventually want to have a brewery located in Omori, but that’s not the only goal I have.”

Spreading the flavors of Ota City’s craft beer across Japan from Haneda

HANEDA SKY BREWING

HANEDA SKY BREWING is conveniently located on the second floor of Haneda Innovation City, in close proximity to Haneda Airport. This inviting restaurant features three brewery tanks where they craft their own exquisite selection of craft beers. We had the opportunity to interview Ms. Sachiko Oya, CEO of TAIHO Ltd., who places great emphasis on the address “1-1 Haneda Airport” and operates the nearest brewery to Haneda Airport.

- Ms. Sachiko Oya
The turning point for me came when I was working in insurance sales in Ota City.
By chance, I took on the task of promotion for a restaurant in Nishikamata called Haneda Bar. What made this establishment unique was its focus on serving craft beer brewed within Ota City. When our promotional efforts began gaining traction, the operating company of Haneda Innovation City approached us with an intriguing proposition. They expressed interest in our restaurant concept, given our association with Haneda and our focus on serving craft beer from Ota City. This led to the opening of HANEDA SKY BREWING in 2020 in Haneda Innovation City.
Shortly after our grand opening, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, and we found ourselves facing a challenging situation. Despite the challenges, we realized that if we did not stay dedicated to the essence of Ota City, running a restaurant here would lose its purpose. This motivated us to create Tenku, a unique craft beer representing Haneda, using leftover nori (seaweed) sourced from a well-established nori shop in Ota City. In addition, we also offer Kuroyu Beer, inspired by the renowned Kuroyu hot spring found in Ota City, Sento Beer, an ideal choice for enjoying after a relaxing hot bath experience, and Omori Kaizuka Beer, crafted with hops sourced from Sanno.

In January 2023, we expanded our ventures by opening RE.beer, a unique establishment on Ikegami Honmonji-dori, offering a combination of craft beer and Japanese food. This restaurant is brimming with love for Ota City. It was designed by students from Nihon Kogakuin College in Kamata, expertly constructed and supervised by a construction company based in Minamiyukigaya. Moreover, the brewery equipment used in the restaurant is proudly sourced from several small factories located in Ota City.
Looking ahead, our vision is to establish a shop within Haneda Airport, enabling us to showcase the excellence of Ota City to people from Japan and around the world through delivering our craft beer from Haneda via air. Our commitment to championing Ota City will remain unwavering as we move forward.

Ms. Oya says, “We are eager to collaborate with the local community to develop unique and original beers.”
