[Special] Please Come Visit! Ota City Map for Flowers and Autumn Foliage

There are many places in Ota City where you can enjoy flowers and autumn foliage while you take a walk. You can enjoy seasonal changes in various places from parks to greenways and avenues.
In this issue, we will introduce locations to see flowers and autumn foliage in Ota City with a map and calendar.

We will start with the plum blossoms that are deeply connected to Ota City and are the ward flower. There are many places for plum blossoms within Ota City such as Ikegami Plum Garden and Seiseki Kamata Umeyashiki Park. From early spring to full spring, there are many places where you can enjoy plum blossoms as well as cherry blossoms, so we recommend taking a walk when it is getting warmer.
From early summer to full summer, you can enjoy many colorful flowers such as hydrangea, Japanese iris, and aquatic plants such as Japanese water iris and sacred lotus.

During autumn, you will see ginkgo, Japanese zelkova, and Japanese maple leaves turning red and yellow.

Our top 3 places for enjoying flowers and autumn foliage

A famous place for flowers and autumn foliage in Ota City is Tamagawadai Park with cherry blossoms and colorful hydrangea as well as autumn foliage on ginkgo and Japanese zelkova. We also have Ikegami Plum Garden, where you can enjoy plum blossoms, the ward flower, to your heart’s content, and Senzokuike Park, where cherry blossoms, ginkgo, and the pond create a great contrast. We will zoom in on these three places to introduce them further.

1. A hydrangea garden with approximately 4,000 hydrangea plants

Tamagawadai Park

Tamagawadai Park is located in a hilly area along the Tamagawa River and has been chosen as one of the Best Eight Scenic Locations near Tamagawa River. It houses a hydrangea garden with about 4,000 hydrangea plants and about 300 cherry blossom trees and is famous as a flower viewing place. The park also displays beautiful autumn foliage and is popular as a park where you can feel the four seasons.

[Main types of flowers]
・ Plum blossoms
・ Cherry blossoms/moss phlox (about 300 trees)
・ Spotted bellflower
・ Hydrangea (about 4,000 plants)
[Main types of autumn foliage]
・ Ginkgo
・ Japanese zelkova
・ Dawn redwood

The park has cherry blossoms planted to surround the square and has a hydrangea garden where visitors can enjoy more or less seven varieties of hydrangea from spring to early summer. This is also one of the precious places where you can see the spotted bellflower, which is rare to see in urban areas.

During autumn, you can see ginkgo, Japanese zelkova, as well as dawn redwood leaves changing colors.

An ancient burial mound is preserved in Tamagawadai Park, and the ancient burial mound is recreated in life size in an exhibition room near the entrance of the park. The shape of the ancient burial mound as it was made by the ancient people has been recreated, and you will be able to see the landscape from over 1,000 years ago. It would be interesting to know what kinds of flowers were blooming at that time.

It is a place where you can think about history amidst the changing of seasons.

Ikegami Plum Garden is a quiet garden where you can enjoy blooming flowers on the hilly slope.

The flowers are lit up for a limited time.
Rhododendron is best to see from April, the actual spring, to mid-May, right around the time just after the Golden Week.

From the end of October to early November every year, a chrysanthemum exhibition is held, so you can enjoy chrysanthemums in all colors (please check the dates with the officials as they are subject to change).

There are many restaurants, long-established sweets shops, and cafes made by renovating old Japanese houses around Ikegami Plum Garden. You should drop by at one of them to take a break during the walk or to buy some souvenirs. We hope you will find your favorite establishment.

3. Enjoy cherry blossoms and autumn foliage along with the view of the pond

Senzokuike Park

Senzokuike Pond is one of the biggest ponds in Tokyo. Cherry blossoms are planted by the pond, so you can enjoy the flowers by boat as well. There are lights, so you can see a different experience of the flowers at night.
There are many kinds of trees whose leaves change colors, so the scenery with yellow and red leaves around the pond is a sight you must see.

[Main types of flowers]
・ Cherry blossoms (Somei-yoshino, etc.)
・ Rhododendron
・ Japanese water iris
・ Hydrangea
[Main types of autumn foliage]
・ Ginkgo
・ Japanese zelkova
・ Japanese maple

In early spring, the cherry blossoms blooming by the pond are amazing. In summer, you can enjoy hydrangea as well as aquatic plants like Japanese water iris.

In autumn, you can see many leaves of ginkgo, Japanese maple, and Japanese zelkova changing colors.

By the way, do you know where the name Senzokuike originates from? It is said that a long time ago, Nichiren put his robe on a pine tree near Myofuku-ji Temple and washed his feet, and that is how the pond started to be called Senzokuike.

It is not just seasonal nature such as flowers and autumn foliage that will delight you but also the Katsu Kaishu Memorial Museum nearby. Kaishu, who loved the scenery around the Senzokuike Pond, had a villa built in 1891 where Omori Dairoku Junior High School is now. The memorial museum uses a Tangible Cultural Property, the Seimei Bunko, which was built after Kaishu’s death, and introduces Kaishu’s achievements and connections to Ota City, conveying Kaishu’s thoughts and the local history.
Kaishu and his wife’s graves are by the Senzokuike Pond, and they are cherished by the local community along with the memorial museum.

How about learning about the historic icon while enjoying the colorful displays of nature by the Senzokuike Pond?
