Kaishu Katsu reportedly passed by the pond on his way toward Ikegami Honmonji when Yoshinobu Tokugawa asked him to negotiate with the new government troops in 1868.
Late in 1891, Kaishu established his second house “Senzokuken” near the pond and deepened his friendship with old acquaintances including former shogun retainers through literary activities.
Graves of Kaishu Katsu and his wife
Kaishu Katsu loved Senzokuike deeply.
In accordance with his wishes, he now rests by the pond.
The tomb of Tamiko, his wife, was later relocated here from Aoyama Cemetery.
Stone monument of Takamori Saigo with a poem inscribed on it
After the death of Saigo, Katsu mourned him and erected the monument for him at his own expense.
A Chinese poem written by Saigo when he was sent to Okinoerabujima Island is inscribed on the front side, and that by Katsu on the back side.
