Katsu Kaishu Memorial Museum

Overview

After Kaishu’s death, the Seimeikai Foundation relocated his villa “Senzokuken” and built the “Seimei Bunko” Library on its adjoining land for collection, exhibition and discussion of his relevant documents.  Eventually, activities of the Seimeikai Foundation ended, and after some changes in ownership, the land where the Seimei Bunko Library resides was acquired by Ota City in March 2012, and the building, which opened in 1933, was donated to the city.

The building was designated a nationally registered historical site (Tangible Cultural Property) in 2000. The Ota City Katsu Kaishu Memorial Museum opened on September 7, 2019 in order to make the best use of the former Seimei Bunko as nationally registered historical site and to introduce Kaishu’s achievements, thoughts, and local history.
